Resurrection of Jesus

the_resurrection_day_

After Jesus’ crucifixion, Joseph of Arimathaea took Jesus’ body and prepared it for burial.

Near the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden there was a new tomb that had been carved out of the rock. No one had been buried in this tomb before.  They laid Jesus in the tomb and rolled a great stone up against the door of the tomb, and left.   The Jewish leaders demanded that guards be stationed at the tomb to keep watch and make sure no one will steal the body.

On the third day after the crucifixion, Mary Magdalene along with other women came to the tomb very early to anoint the body of Jesus.   Before they approached the tomb, there was a great earthquake, and an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled away the stone and sat upon it.

The angel’s appearance was like lightning and his clothing was white as snow. The guards were paralyzed with fear, and became like dead men.

The stone was rolled away and the Roman guards were gone. When they entered the tomb, the Lord’s body was not there. The women were very scared and as they were leaving to tell the others, two angels in dazzling apparel met them in the tomb, one at the head and the other at the foot of the tomb, and said to them:

Don’t be afraid. We know that you are looking for Jesus, the Nazarene who has been crucified.  Why are you looking for the living among the dead? He is not here, but he is risen, just like he said he would.  Don’t you remember what he told you when he was in Galilee? The Son of man was going to be delivered up into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and rise again on the third day.   Come, look at the place where they laid him! See the place where the Lord lay.  Now, go quickly and tell his disciples He is risen from the dead and he is going to meet you in Galilee. You will see him there.

Mary stood outside the tomb and was weeping , she saw someone in the garden who asked her “Woman why are you weeping?”  Assuming He was the gardener, she told Him “They have taken away my Lord and I do not know where they have laid Him”.  Then she recognized that man to be Jesus himself.  Jesus said to her: “Do not touch me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go to my brothers and tell them I am ascending to my Father and your Father, and my God and your God. Do not fear, go tell my brothers who are going to Galilee that they will soon see.”

So she ran and told the others what she had seen.

One time Jesus appeared to two men as they were traveling on a road to Emmaus. Jesus joined them on the road as they were discussing the events of His death; He asked about their concern and they told Him. As they walked He began to preach to them and explain to them about the Kingdom of God. When they arrived to their destination, they insisted that Jesus stay the night and dine with them.

Jesus agreed, while they were having dinner Jesus took the bread and gave thanks to the Father and broke it as He had done many times before, and at that moment they realized it was Jesus whom they were speaking to all along and were amazed, but Jesus disappeared before their eyes.  Then they know that Jesus was raised from the dead and praised and Glorified God for Him.

Another time as Jesus appeared to the apostles and gave them the great commission saying:

Go into the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. And make disciples of all the nations, baptizing  them into the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you.

He who believes and is baptized will be saved, but he who disbelieves will be condemned.

This it is written that the Christ should suffer, and rise again from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and remission  of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations, starting in Jerusalem.

And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues, they will take up serpents, and drink deadly things, and it will not hurt them. They will lay hands on the sick and they will be healed.

I am with you always, even to the end of the world.

Jesus appeared to His disciples several times after His resurrection and they all believed and confessed that He truly is the Christ the Son of the living God.

Finally, Jesus led His beloved disciples out to the mount and He blessed them, and then He was carried into heaven on the clouds.  And they worshipped Him.

And while they were still looking into heaven, two angels, stood by them in white apparel.  And they said to them:

You men of Galilee, why are you standing here looking into heaven? Jesus, who was received up into heaven will come again in the same way that you saw him go.

CHRIST IS RISEN

and sits at the right hand of the Father and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Amen.
